Autonomy-Based Communication Approach

ABA at our centre stands for Autonomy-Based Communication Approach. It is a speech-language pathologist led model that mixes in valued ABA practices, such as structure and consistent intervention, while placing speech, language, communication, and connection at the centre of intervention to focus on child-autonomy.

Our programs are designed and led by registered speech-language pathologists, with the valuable input of a Board Certified Behavioural Analyst (BCBA) to ensure communication development - including spoken language, AAC, social communication, and self-advocacy - drives all goals, activities, and decision-making.

We respect that families choose many different supports for their children. Our centre exists because:

Many families want communication-first therapy
Many families are searching for therapy that is practical (their child is able to use the skills in everyday life)
Communication differences require specialized SLP-led support, not behaviour modification

We focus on:

Intrinsic motivation
Regulation before communication
Child-led goals
Neurodiversity-affirming practice
Relationship-based intervention

Integration, not Replacement

We thoughtfully integrate useful, evidence-based practices often associated with ABA, including:

• Consistent routines and predictable structure

• Clear goal-setting and data-informed decision-making

• Task analysis to break down complex communication skills

• Repetition and high practice opportunities

• Individualized programming based on each child’s strengths and needs

These elements are used in service of communication development, not to shape behaviour or enforce compliance.

Our Communication First Difference

Unlike traditional behaviour-based models, our approach prioritizes:

• Communication as the primary goal, not behaviour change

• Regulation and emotional safety as foundations for learning

• Intrinsic motivation rather than external rewards

• Child-led, play-based interactions grounded in connection

• Respect for neurodiversity, autonomy, and individual communication styles

We view all "behaviour" as communication. Instead of asking “How do we change this behaviour?”, we ask: “What is this child communicating, and how can we support them to express it more effectively?”

Speech & Language at its Core

All programming is grounded in speech-language pathology scope of practice, including:

• Expressive and receptive language development

• AAC access and functional use

• Social communication and pragmatic language

• Speech sound development and motor speech

• Narrative language and literacy foundations

• Support with immediate and delayed echolalia

• Parent coaching and carryover strategies

• Literacy support (spelling, reading, comprehension, narration)

While structured teaching strategies may be used, communication goals always guide intervention, and progress is measured by meaningful participation, connection, and functional communication — not compliance.

A Supportive Bridge for Families

We understand that many families are transitioning from or considering ABA services. Our model offers a supportive bridge — familiar in structure, but fundamentally different in purpose.

Families can expect:

• Multiple hours of meaningful communication-based intervention

• Small group and individual sessions

• Consistent routines with flexibility for regulation and play

• Collaboration with families and other professionals

Our goal is not to replace families’ past experiences, but to offer an alternative grounded in communication, respect, and connection.
