FAQs

How does speech therapy help children in Markham, ON and surrounding areas?

Speech therapy helps children build the communication skills needed to connect, learn, play, and express themselves confidently. In a diverse community like Markham, many children are exposed to multiple languages, cultures, and communication styles. At Bridge to Communication, we understand the difference between a language difference and a true speech or language delay.

Our therapy supports children with:

  • Speech sound delays and unclear speech

  • Late talking and language delays

  • Social communication challenges

  • Stuttering and fluency concerns

  • Autism-related communication needs

  • Literacy and school-readiness skills

  • AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) support

We work collaboratively with families to respect cultural values, multilingual development, and each child’s unique communication journey.

When should parents consider therapy for speech and language delay?

Parents may want to seek an assessment and speech therapy if their child:

  • Is difficult to understand for their age

  • Uses fewer words than expected

  • Has trouble following directions

  • Becomes frustrated when communicating

  • Is not combining words or sentences as expected

  • Has difficulty interacting socially with peers

  • Shows challenges with attention, play, or communication development

Early support can make a meaningful difference. Even if you are unsure whether your child’s communication is “typical”, an assessment can help provide clarity, reassurance, and guidance.

What makes Bridge to Communication different from other speech therapy clinics?

At Bridge to Communication, we believe communication is more than just speech. Our approach is relationship-based, individualized, and child-centred.

What makes us different:

  • Therapy is tailored to each child’s strengths, interests, and goals

  • We focus on meaningful communication in everyday life

  • We incorporate play, connection, and emotional regulation into sessions

  • We support neurodiversity-affirming practices

  • We value collaboration with families, schools, and other professionals

  • We offer support for a wide range of communication profiles, including autism, motor speech challenges, literacy, and AAC users

Our goal is not cookie-cutter therapy — it is helping each child feel understood, capable, and confident.

Can early intervention speech therapy support school readiness?

Yes. Early intervention can help children build foundational skills needed for preschool and school success. Communication skills are closely connected to learning, social interaction, emotional regulation, and literacy development.

Speech therapy may help children:

  • Understand and follow directions

  • Express needs, thoughts, and ideas

  • Build vocabulary and sentence structure

  • Develop pre-literacy and storytelling skills

  • Improve attention and participation

  • Strengthen social communication and peer interaction

Supporting communication early can help children feel more confident and prepared in classroom settings.

How does therapy support toddlers who stutter?

Stuttering in toddlers can look like repeating sounds, words, or phrases, getting “stuck” while talking, or showing frustration during communication. Early therapy focuses on reducing communication pressure and supporting confident, positive interactions.

Therapy may include:

  • Parent coaching and strategies for home

  • Creating supportive communication environments

  • Encouraging relaxed and confident speaking

  • Monitoring fluency development over time

  • Helping families understand when stuttering is developmental versus when further support is recommended

  • Using evidence-based programs such as LIDCOMBE

Our goal is to support communication without increasing anxiety or pressure around speaking.

What does pediatric autism speech therapy focus on?

Autism speech therapy focuses on helping children develop meaningful, functional communication in ways that work best for them. Every autistic child communicates differently, our speech language pathologists work closely with our behavioural therapist to ensure therapy is individualized to each child's needs and strengths.

Areas of focus may include:

  • Expressive and receptive language

  • Social communication and interaction

  • Gestures, play, and joint attention

  • AAC and alternative communication systems

  • Emotional regulation and connection

  • Conversation and perspective-taking skills

  • Supporting communication across home, school, and community settings

We use a neurodiversity-affirming approach that respects each child’s communication style and individuality.

Is preschool speech therapy available in Markham, ON?

Yes. Bridge to Communication offers preschool speech therapy services for children in Markham and surrounding areas. Therapy can support toddlers and preschoolers with speech, language, social communication, play, literacy readiness, and early developmental concerns. Sessions are designed to be engaging, play-based, and developmentally appropriate while helping children build communication skills in a supportive environment.

Do speech therapy programs include family guidance?

Absolutely. Family involvement is an important part of successful therapy. This is why parent coaching is a vital aspect of our therapy. Parents and caregivers are supported with strategies, education, and practical ways to encourage communication at home and in everyday routines.

We believe progress happens best when children feel supported across all environments. Family guidance may include:

  • Home practice ideas

  • Communication strategies during play and routines

  • Education about speech and language development

  • Collaboration regarding school or daycare concerns

  • Support navigating communication challenges with confidence

Who can benefit from speech therapy for children programs?
Speech therapy can benefit children with a wide range of communication needs, including:

  • Late talker

  • Articulation or speech sound difficulties

  • Stuttering

  • Autism-related communication differences

  • Language delays

  • Literacy and reading challenges

  • Social communication difficulties

  • Motor speech disorders

Children do not need a diagnosis to benefit from support. If communication challenges are impacting everyday life, learning, confidence, or relationships, speech therapy may help.
